Micah: The Lord is coming to judge, but Jesus is coming also.
Background: Micah means “who is like the LORD" (7:18).
He preached primarily in Judah about 750 – 690 B.C., but he did address the northern kingdom which fell in 722 B.C. (5:5 – Assyria will attack).
His ministry overlapped with Isaiah in Judah & Hosea in the north, Israel.
He warned kings like Jothan, Ahaz, & Hezekiah.
Micah was a “country boy” from Moresheth, near Gaza, about 25 miles SW of Jerusalem.
Purpose: warn Judah that they would be judged like Israel was if they did not repent of their idolatry, immorality, and injustices. The book is made up of 3 sermons, which begin with “hear” in 1:2, 3:1, & 6:1. Each “oracle” had warning of doom for disobedience, but hope because of the covenant with God.
Micah texts are referred to in other books: 4:1-3 is in Isaiah 2:2-4; 3:12 is in Jeremiah 26:18; 5:2 is in Matthew 2:6; and 7:6 is in Matthew 10:35-36.
Doom for Sin is Sure, and Deserved.
The LORD is coming down, but able to see & judge from the heavens (1:3, 12)
The next generation can suffer because of their choices (1:16).
You can control your choices, but you cannot control the punishments (2:1-3.
The capital, Jerusalem, will be destroyed (3:12).
Disobedience is Spelled out clearly.
Idolatry in high places (1:7).
Immorality included prostitution (1:7, 21)
Independent spirit of trust in military, not God (1:13).
Injustices like coveting, violence, and oppression.
Detailed Problem – Indicators that judgement has begun.
Incurable wounds (1:9).
False prophets (2:6-11; 3:5-7).
Broken homes & widows abound (2:9).
Corrupt rulers (3:1-4).
Delight in the Hope of Christ’s coming(s).
He is coming out of His dwelling place to march on mountaintops (1:2).
He will gather and assemble with His people and lead His sheep (2:12-13).
He will be born in Bethlehem (5:2).
We deserve God’s wrath, but Jesus one day came to bear that wrath on Himself; born to die upon Calvary.
