The concluding passage calls us to prayer, praise, and pursuit of those who need spiritual help.  James’ practical conclusions are a culmination of “faith that saves is faith that works."

I. Prayer is Continual through all Life Circumstances for Believers. (James 5:13-15)

A.      Pray when you are going through suffering.

B.      Pray when you and others are sick.

C.     Pray with confession when you sin.

Discussion:  Find and list what we pray for from each chapter of James.

For example:

  • James 1:3 – Lord, strengthen my faith so that you can test it and produce patient endurance in me.

  • James 1:5 – Lord, give me wisdom.   Read & share each verse that leads you to other prayers you need to pray regularly.

II. Praise is Characteristic of God’s Work in People of Faith. (James 5:13)

A.     Praise God when you are cheerful.

B.     Praise God by singing the Psalms.

C.    Praise God for answered prayer;  “the Lord will raise him up.”  The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”  “The earth produced its fruit.”  James 5:16-18.

D.    Praise God for a soul saved from death (5:20.)

Discussion:  Find and list praises from each chapter of James.

For example:

  • Lord, I praise You for producing patience in me from the trials You take me through (1:2-3).

  • Lord, I praise You for the crown of life You promise to those who love You (1:12).

  • Review many other praises you think of as you meditate on each chapter of James.

III. Pursue Fellow-Believers to Maintain & Restore Fellowship (5:16-20).

A.     Confess your trespasses to one another (5:16).

B.     Confront those who are straying from the truth (5:20).  Speak truth in love.

Discussion:  Find and share truths from each chapter of James that help you confess your shortcomings to others.  Share truths you find in James that help you confront others in need.

For example:

  • Friend, can I help strengthen your faith in this trial? Your doubting of God’s goodness will lead to un-answered prayers, and to being blown around by life’s waves of difficulty & error (1:6).

  • Friend, if you are living for money, you will never be satisfied, and it fades away like grain, flowers, and beauty (1:11).

  • What other truths will help you pursue and help an erring brother?
