Help for When We Feel Helpless

Psalm 94:12-15

As I hear about the events going on at this time, it is easy to feel somewhat helpless. We hear about corruption in the highest levels of our government, and it seems that justice never comes. We hear about crimes and murders, greed and swindling—still little to no justice. We watch politicians fail to even attempt to fulfill their campaign promises, and it seems like our votes don’t matter. We see public officials over-step their authority and act like dictators or petty tyrants rather than public servants, and we have no idea how to even begin to fix it. We watch the economy ebb and flow while seemingly being controlled by wicked people in high places, and we feel like a twig caught in the flow of a stream—helpless to anything but go along for the ride. All these things appear so massively beyond our control. Here is one truth that will help us…God is bigger.

Here are two things that will strengthen our trust in our God Who is bigger than all our troubles. First, we must find help in His word.

Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O Lord,

And teach out of Your law,

That You may give him rest from the days of adversity,

Until the pit is dug for the wicked.

Two things happen when we look to God’s word for help. We get happiness and rest. Notice that it doesn’t matter what is going on around us. The rest is “from the days of adversity”—not after the days of adversity. The next phrase is “until the pit is dug for the wicked.” That means that the wicked have not yet got their just desserts.

For the Lord will not cast off His people,

Nor will He forsake His inheritance.

But judgment will return to righteousness,

And all the upright in heart will follow it.

The reason that we can experience happiness and rest is because God is faithful and true. He never changes and He never forgets His promises. God will never let His children go. Sometimes we have to ask people if they forgot about us. That never happens with God. We can keep going because we are confident that God will one day make everything right.

So even though everything seems to be out of our control, we can rest in our faithful God Who has never once relinquished His command over all things.
